With this simple, affordable recipe, you can make your own coconut oil sunscreen and avoid exposure to toxic chemicals which can be found in abundance in store products. However, preparing it demands a certain amount of caution. The ingredients shouldn’t be ingested, so a dust mask is advisable.
1/4 c of coconut oil
1/4 c of shea butter
1/8 c of sesame or jojoba oil
2 tablespoon of beeswax granules
1-2 tbsp of zinc oxide powder (optional)
1 tbsp of red raspberry seed oil (20-30 drops)
Carrot seed essential oil
Essential oils of your choice
Melt the coconut oil, sesame/jojoba oil, beeswax and shea butter in a double boiler or a small pan over very low heat. When everything is properly melt, remove the mixture and let it cool down, preferably to room temperature. If using zinc oxide, whisk it but make sure not to create too much dust. Put the mixture in the fridge for 15-30 minutes. Use a mixer and start to whip it. Drizzle in the red raspberry seed oil, the carrot seed oil, and any essential oils of your choice, and continue whipping until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Apply in the same manner as you would any sunscreen oil. Make sure to store it in a glass container and keep it in the fridge between uses.
